Dr.Greene's Back-to-School Letter 2018

KINDERGARTEN HOURS change to 1:50 p.m. on Monday, October 8 and remain so through June 2019. The only exception is October 31, when kindergartners are dismissed at 11:50 a.m.

INTERNET SAFETY: Please join Dr. Greene, Mrs. Sheri Styczen (D29 Tech Director), and Mrs. Kellie Johnson (Library/Media Specialist) for a 2nd Cup of Coffee Meeting on Wednesday 10/10 at 9:00 a.m. We’ll talk about how to create and communicate safe parameters for young children’s smartphone and tablet use, ways to monitor their usage, as well as various ways that students may be exposed to inappropriate apps/content when they are not under your supervision.

TORNADO DRILL: In the final safe place drill for the school year will practice where to go and what to do in the event of a tornado warning. The drill takes place the morning of 10/10/18.

CELL PHONES IN THE DRIVEWAY: Drivers should cease using their cell phones during pick-up or drop-off time, when students are present on the sidewalk. We understand that some people arrive early, but once the students appear, the potential for distraction makes cell phone usage unsafe. Thank you for putting down your phones while there are children on the sidewalk!

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES are scheduled for 11/19 from 2:00-8:00 p.m. Online signup will go live on Monday, October 15. Look for specific instructions in next week’s Friday News email.

10/31 HALLOWEEN SCHEDULE: A letter went home in backpacks this afternoon detailing the schedule for Halloween, as well as guidelines for student costumes. A copy is also posted here. Halloween2018.pdf

SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY: On Monday, 9/24, Northfield police officers spoke to the children about “Stranger Danger”. Students learned about common situations for children walking or playing alone/unsupervised and strategies for dealing with “bad” strangers who approach them. The "Big 3" include: 1) Say NO loudly; 2) Run away; and 3) Tell a safe adult. Additionally, we conducted a school wide fire drill from the lunchroom on Tuesday morning.

VISION AND HEARING SCREENINGS: All Middlefork students were screened on Friday, 9/28. Students who did not pass the first screening will be rescreened on October 12. After that date, if a more thorough exam by a doctor is recommended, Mrs. Mertes will be in contact with the parents.
LUNCHES FOR THE HOMELESS: With your continued support, the Middlefork School community will once again provide lunches to the meals program at the Second Baptist Church in Evanston. Last school year we provided over 900 lunches! Our first donation includes lunches from every grade level, and the scheduled date is November 13. There are six donation dates in all, with each grade level assigned four dates. Download the attached document for specifics on this 20+ year tradition. (homeless lunch dates Note.docx)
