SCHOOL CLOSING PROCEDURES

EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSINGS

The strategic decision to close schools during inclement weather can have a significant impact on families. The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority in making a decision to close schools during inclement weather.

  • District 29 will utilize the following data sources in making a school closure decision:

    • Current and Predicted Weather
    • Current and Predicted Travel Conditions
    • Condition of Facilities
    • Ability to Sufficiently Staff our Schools
    • Collaboration with New Trier Township School Districts.

    • The Superintendent of Schools, or designee, is empowered to make the final decision regarding school closures.
  • District 29 utilizes multiple sources to communicate the closure of school to our stakeholders:

    1. A communication is sent to all registered stakeholders through the "Parent Square" application between 5:45 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. on the morning of a school closure, whenever possible.
    2. A closing notice will be posted on the District 29 website (www.sunsetridge29.org).
    3. A closing notice will be posted on http://www.EmergencyClosings.com.
    4. The closing is reported to major local television networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, WGN, Fox) and major local radio outlets WGN (720-AM) and WBBM (780-AM).

    • The decision to close school is generally made prior to 6:00 a.m. on the day of the closing. Our goal is to notify our parents, guardians and staff of a closure by 6:15 a.m. on the day of the closing.

    • In some cases of inclement weather, District 29 may employ a "delayed start" practice whereby the school day will start later than normal.
    • The decision to utilize a delayed start will be made no later than 6:00 a.m. on the day of delayed start. The delayed start allows to conduct school, avoid the problems of rescheduling a cancelled day and, most importantly, permit students and staff to travel to school in off-peak traffic or once the weather conditions have improved. The same notification procedures for emergency closing will be employed for a delayed start.
    • The District 29 calendar includes the possibility of up to five (5) additional "Emergency Closure Days" added to the end of the school year.
